Olorgesailie prehistoric site found in the great right valley floor of Kenya is one of the best is the World. It measures 300 Kilometers square and dates back 1.2 million years according to scientists. The areas is about one hour’s drive south of Nairobi city and has sites such as the butchery originally the a place for hunting expeditions which scientists believe was used by Homo erectus as well an in-situ museum which contains stone age hand axes.

According to Dr. Rick Potts the place has so many prehistoric tools and they can easily be found in sediments when digging through the layers of soil in the area.

The prehistoric site was originally discovered in 1919 by John Walter Gregory and was eventually visited by Louis and Mary Leakey in 1942 that have done great fossil hunting in Kenya over the last century. The area has a gang walk all over the area which was initiated by the first African Archaeology Congress which was held in 1947.

According to Mr. Potts who has studied the area more than any other person in the last 30 years, Olorgesailie has sediments with each layer telling a lot about the history of mankind. He has worked in conjunction with the National Museums of Kenya closely over the years.

The area is full of prehistoric tools and bones as well as fossilized papyrus which are buried deep in the layers of sediment. The papyrus suggests there was a lake in the area, however it is now a dry dusty area with day time temperatures soaring to 40 degrees celcius. The area is buried in dust layers from the volcanic ashes of the nearby Mount Olergesailie and Mount Esakut. Remains of elephus recki which is believed to be closely related to the present day Indian elephant and is larger than the present elephants have been unearthed in the area.

According to Dr. Potts during a conference which was organized by the Prehistory Club and Kenya Museum Society which was held in the National Museums of Kenya, hand axes keep rolling out the layers of sediment in the region and he believes that the tolds which have been used for over 1.5 million years were first used in Africa before the technology was transferred to areas like Asia and Europe.

PARTNERS: Find your gorilla safari in the leading gorilla trekking company.

Archaelogist says the olorgesailie sites represent two eras the most recent being the Middle stone-age site which dates back to 500,000 years to 100,000 years ago during which was the time that they used the sophisticate flakes. The flakes are sharp-edged tools which are made from a precise strike on a core stone. The earliest time being the hand axe site is between 1.2 million to 500,000 years ago. However according to Dr. Potts the stones used to make the tools are not found locally and were from 150 kilometers away an indication that people exchanged products even as far back. The Middle Stone age is a time that is characterized by increased social networks, smaller technology and increased use of symbols which corresponds with modern African wildlife.

The Olorgesailie is the largest studied site in the world for the period covering the period of 1.2 million years ago. It is also the oldest known middle Stone Age site in the whole world.

Amboseli national park

Tsavo West national park

Tsavo East national park

Mombasa City tour

Day 1 – Amboseli National Park Tour

Leave Nairobi in the morning and pass via Namanga on the Tanzania border to reach Amboseli early in the afternoon. We view game as we encounter towards the campsite for dinner and overnight. This small park (at 392 sq km) is the second most popular park in Kenya after Masai Mara, mainly due to the extraordinary backdrop of Mt. Kilimanjaro on the southern boundary.

Day 2 – Amboseli National Park Safari

On this day will be adventuring the park. The waters from melted snow drain down the mountain under lava flows and surface on the Amboseli plains, creating a green belt of swampland amidst dusty plains. Primates such as cheetah, elephant, lion, warthogs, wildebeest, hyena, jackal, zebra, buffalo and the Maasai giraffe are likely to be seen.

Day 3 – Tsavo West national park tour

After the early morning breakfast will depart for Tsavo West National Park. Visit the Mzima Springs and the Chyulu Hills which are suitable for viewing both the hippo and crocodile that can be seen from an underwater observation chamber if time permits. Dinner and overnight at the campsite (FB).

Day 4 – Tsavo West national park safari

This day will be spent exploring the park including the nature trails. In Tsavo West birds are very common – look out for the red-beaked hornbills, white-bellied go-away bird and bateleur Eagles. There are also large populations of leopards, elephants and zebras. Look out for dung beetles undulating huge balls of elephant dung along the tracks.

Day 5 – Tsavo East national park tour

Early in the morning after breakfast we depart to Tsavo East national park. This park was famous for its large herds of elephant covered in red dust and fine scenery. We visit the scenic Lugards Falls, Mudanda Rocks (attracts elephants in the drier season) and Aruba Dam as we view game if timeallows.

The landscape in Tsavo East national park is flatter and drier, regardless of having one of Kenya’s largest rivers flowing through the middle. Much of the wildlife harbours on the Galana River, which has overflowing crocs and hippos. Likewise, waterbucks, Kudus and dik-diks are common along the river banks.

Day 6 – Mombasa

After the early morning breakfast, then proceed to early morning game drive. Then after lunch we will proceed to Mombasa arriving there in good time for airport transfers back home.

End of safari

Accommodation: Lodges and Hotels
Destinations: Maasai Mara, Nairobi , Laikipa, Samburu and Mount Kenya. What do you can expect in the 6 days Luxury in the Bush Kenya Safari .Kenya pioneered photography safaris virtually a half century ago, and this northern circuit remains as exhilarating and prolific as it was that long ago. Many numbers of wild game have actually increased and this is particularly true of elephant. Enjoy some of East Africa’s most amazing scenery in the northern frontier before ending at Kenya’s best game park, the Maasai Mara on this Kenya vacation package.

Day 1: Nairobi, Kenya Safari Vacation

The Kenya vacation package begins in Nairobi, East Africa’s most brisk and colorful city. If you arrive early enough, a number of sightseeing excursions are available, including to the famous National Museum, and to the attractions in the nearby colony of Karen, including Karen Blixen’s homestead and Giraffe Manor. Overnight at The Norfolk Hotel, the city’s finest.

Day 2: Nairobi – Laikipia (Samburu), Kenya Safari Holiday

Morning flight into Kenya’s northern state line followed by a motor vehicle transfer into an gigantic private conservation ranch. The ‘Laikipia’ region of northern Kenya has become a model for wildlife conservation and sustainable development the world over.
Individual reserves, some as large as 100,000 acres, have been protected from rampant agriculture and cattle farming, to protect the natural wildlife and outstandingly astonishing bushlands. You will reach the luxurious camp in time for lunch, and without curious further ado, in the afternoon you instigate your many varied activities.

Days 3 & 4: Laikipia

The area is illustrious for its Elephant, but this is a elegant and marvelous ecosystem with some of the rarest wildlife on earth. Nowhere else will you unearth the world’s most handsome Giraffe, the reticulated, or the rare Grevy’s Zebra. The area abounds with the atypical long-necked Impala known as the Gerenuk, as well as the blue-legged Somali ostrich.

These creatures have association nowhere else, but you’ll also see many of the regulars, including Gazelle, Buffalo, common Zebra and the great predators on your Kenya vacation package. You’ll be shown around by the reserve’s owners, all of who take a personal interest in this marvelous area. There will be opportunities for game viewing and curious activities, like walking and possibilities for river safaris and spelunking. Consider this like visiting an American dude ranch, with the distinct difference that you’ll be hearing the roaring of Lions at night!

Day 5: Laikipia / Mount Kenya Safari

On this day you will drive through the back roads of these very remote wildernesses are hard to gauge, so today’s almanac will be leisurely. The majority of the morning will be spent on the ranch and in the afternoon you’ll make your way back up the escarpment to Mount Kenya. The evening is spent in the historic splendour of the Mount Kenya Safari Club, the resort created by William Holden and today the site of the famous William Holden Wildlife Foundation. If you arrive early enough, you’ll be able to visit the famous Animal Orphanage before the gourmet dinner.

Day 6: Mount Kenya Safari / Masai Mara Tour

You will have a morning flight into Kenya’s finest big game reserve; the Masai Mara arriving in time for lunch at the camp. This will be followed by an afternoon game viewing. For three nights on your Kenya vacation you’ll enjoy the splendor of a very exclusive camp built on the bank.

End of Kenya Vacation Package.
